A MONSTER CALLS (2016)

Dir. J.A. Bayona
Cast: Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbel
Genre: Family Drama, Fantasy

This is a family film with deep and meaningful messages. Depressing occasionally, but heartwarming most of the times.

The film tell a story about a young boy having a hard time juggling between his mother's terminal illness and bullies in school. He manages to stay calm and able to deal with all sort of problems whilst deep in his heart lies a hidden feeling waiting to burst out of him.

A Monster Calls is what you called a film with hidden messages and those messages are delivered well through all interactions and dialogues between the kid and the titular character. Lewis MacDougall as the kid is nothing but excellent. Every other characters also played extremely well especially Felicity Jones as the kid's mother.

It is also a well crafted film technically. The animations in the middle of film done artistically beautiful. The Monster look astonishing also. The film manage to tell the allegory about handling and coping to a loss of someone you love much lighter and easier to understand.

A truly beautiful film on the eyes, yet wonderful in my heart.

My rate: (4/5)
